Laying at the foot of the Great Rift Valley and next to an escarpment, Lake Manyara National Park is the smallest in the northern circuit and is renowned for its natural beauty.
The park is dominated by the lake from where it gets its name. It has fabulous birdlife, with the lake attracting flamingos and pelicans as well as other waterfowl. There are several different species of hornbills in residence as well as kingfishers, the strange looking hamerkop, and more than 400 species of bird.
The park is famous for its tree-climbing lions, one of only two such groups in Africa. The lions escape the heat of the day resting up in large fig trees before descending to hunt as the sun sets.
Lake Manyara enjoys a large number of elephants, along with giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and various antelope. Leopards haunt the forests and the very large troops of baboons are impossible to miss. A boat cruise on the lake will introduce you to hippos wallowing in the water and crocodiles basking on the riverbank.
